Before I went away to attend a major university on the East Coast, my parents sat me down to give me some advice. They gave me the standard speech about how important a degree would be for my future and how I would have to be mature enough to do all my homework and keep my grades up without anyone there to remind me to do so. And of course they gave me a long lecture about why I should stay away from drugs and alcohol -- all in all, it was the usual parent stuff. In fact, the only unexpected thing they did was tell me to start researching college health insurance plans before I left.
This was unexpected because I figured I was covered on my parents' policies. This was true, but my dad explained that a college health insurance plan taken out specifically in my name would be much safer and more convenient in the long run. Apparently, my parents' policy was very restrictive as to the doctors and hospitals that could be consulted in the event of an emergency. So if I had my own college health insurance, I would be able to seek treatment near my school without worrying about whether I would be covered or not.
Getting a college health insurance policy in my name sounded like a smart thing to do, so I went online to start checking out the various plans that are available. My parents had given me some basic guidelines as far as what to look for in a college health insurance plan, such as premiums, deductibles, annual caps, and breadth of the company's medical network. I treated my college health insurance search as I would a school assignment, and put all the results of my research into an easy-to-read chart. This made it simple for my parents and I to sit down and compare the various college health insurance plans that are available.
I left the final decision about my college health insurance up to my parents. After all, they have more experience with that type of thing and would be able to evaluate the different policies much more effectively than I could. When all was said and done, we selected a pretty comprehensive college health insurance plan that would provide coverage for everything from minor illnesses to major accidents.
Although I hope I never have to actually use my college health insurance coverage, I'm glad that I have it. It gives my parents some peace of mind because they know I'll be taken care of even though I'll be more than a thousand miles away from home. Plus, now I know that with my college health insurance plan, I won't have to uproot my life to come back home if I get sick. And that's what gives me peace of mind.

Christmas decorations are one of the many ways to express your joy during this festive season. The wonderful part about decorations is that there are many types to choose from at all kinds of prices to match every budget and lifestyle.
Some people choose to go the whole nine yards decorating every spruce tree in their yard along with the exterior of their home. Others choose to make a simple Christmas light string display. Everyone however usually utilizes some sort of lights on a string including those who choose to do large scale decorations and those who choose to stay modest. They come as small or as long as you require; some use them on the windows or doors whereas others use the Christmas light string all over the house. The Christmas light string comes in the traditional Christmas colors of red, yellow, green and blue; some flicker and other have a Christmas tune that plays non stop when the lights are on, which can be quite annoying at night or if you are watching TV but, a great party starter for Christmas day.
A benefit is that they do not consume much power so you can leave them on the whole night if you choose; in fact that is yet another great thing about Christmas, when you drive around at night and it’s cold outside, you can see Christmas trees brightly lit and shining as if warming you up. The Christmas light string is a gentle reminder of the season and looks especially inviting if outside and snow is falling.
Like many people, I enjoy December for the peace and serenity that the Christmas season brings. Seeing children laughing and Santa Claus at the mall reminds us of how innocent and wonderful the season truly is. With a Christmas light string brightening up your home you can truly feel the festive atmosphere.

I am sick of the marketing of Christmas, and I bet that you are as well by now. Oh, I know, people have talked to death about commercialism and consumerism and such, but these are not the things that anger me the very most. No, not at all. What angers me most is the way that our rigid roles are reinforced by the ways that people market their Christmas gift ideas. This, they will say, is the right Christmas gift for a man, that the right Christmas gift for a woman, and the other, the perfect Christmas gift for a teenager – as if the whole personality of someone could come down simply to their gender and age. Let me say this plainly now, and not be misunderstood: there is no ideal Christmas gift for a male. They may tell you that a Christmas gift for a man is a pocket knife, or a new tie, or a war book, but all of that is hogwash. The only perfect Christmas gift for a man is the gift that that man wants, and men are as different from each other as they are from women or teenagers.
Of course, I know that the companies market Christmas gifts for a man partly as a way to make things easy for the consumer. They want to put things that men usually want all together, so that when someone does go out and look for a Christmas gift for a man, they will see them all in one section. But beyond that, I think that the system of having men's Christmas gifts and women's Christmas gifts has a more sinister function. I think that they do it all to cement their hold over us. If a Christmas gift for a man is a pocket knife or a nice watch, then every year you have to buy all of the men in your life one of these things. And so on.
It is really every bit as sinister as all that, and I am not joking. There are people who spend years thinking about how to best market to a group of people, and this is how they think. They will try to make everyone buy the most expensive Christmas gift for a man that they can, and that way they will make more money. And money is, of course, what the holiday is all about for these companies.

The new birth control patch may be a big danger. You should research this option thoroughly before using it. Birth control pills have been around for decades and are generally safe for everyone. Smoking cigarettes can make using birth control pills or the patch very dangerous. The risks associated with smoking cigarettes are increased greatly with the use of the birth control patch.
The birth control patch has come under serious scrutiny lately. It seems as though the birth control patch comes with a much higher risk of blood clotting than its counterpart the pill. I had a hard time buying into the idea of a birth control patch mostly because of silly reasons. I wondered how well a birth control patch would stay on.
I thought that it had to be difficult to get the right dose of hormones with the birth control patch and I wondered what would happen if too much hormone was released into my bloodstream. I worried that it could cause a skin rash. I did not give much thought to the serious health concerns that come with the birth control patch mostly because I never really considered it as a possibility for myself. It appears that may have been a very wise decision on my part.
The patch may be on its way to being banned if it keeps getting the bad press that it has been getting as of late. It has been alleged that the birth control patch has caused blood clots in otherwise healthy women. I do not recommend the use of the birth control patch. With all the pills out there that do the same thing, I do not think that the patch is necessary. Although it may have appeared to be a new and intriguing option for birth control, it has yet to prove itself to be safe.
There seem to be class action lawsuits waiting in the wings that could take down the patch for good. Once the manufacturer has to shell out big bucks to settle such lawsuits, they may have to discontinue making the product because it is no longer cost effective. The FDA has been criticized for approving medications without giving them enough thought or doing adequate research to prove that the medications are safe. In a world where the pharmaceutical realm seems to be more concerned with turning profits, you should not blindly trust any medication or procedure that has been approved by the FDA.
We all know that we should be wary of any compound or procedure that has not been approved by the FDA, but we have reason to questions those that are approved. Do not diagnose yourself. With the amount of information consumers receive through commercials, many are overconfident and think that they can accurately diagnose their health problems as well as appropriate solutions. This is simply untrue. You should always speak to a doctor before going on any new health regimen and be a skeptical consumer when it comes to new drugs.

Shockingly enough, I'm a woman who doesn't enjoy shopping very much. I am definitely not a fan of Christmas shopping. I never know what to get for people, how much to spend and feel like I'm forgetting someone on my list. This year, shopping will be incredibly difficult because I'm on a very tight budget. Everyone on my list will be getting a cheap Christmas present. Not that I want to get people a cheap Christmas present, but I financially have no choice. Now I just need to find some place to get a cheap Christmas present for everyone. And I just hope that people don't open their gifts and think "what a cheap Christmas present!"
The first thing I needed to do to accommodate my incredibly tight budget, was to narrow down my list. We all have a list of people that we want to get presents for. However, sometimes that list needs to be revised several times. I tried to only list family and friends whom I need to get things for. Now, I have to find a cheap Christmas present for each of the people on my list. That's so much easier said than done. The task will be to find a cheap Christmas present for everyone that doesn't look cheap. I don't want people to be offended. I looked through some magazines that had some creative gift ideas in them and decided to mix creativity with my shopping. I picked a Saturday and hit the local strip mall. We have a local discount store that is actually an excellent source for finding some really nice things. I cruised the aisles for about an hour getting some ideas in my head before I decided to start putting some things in my card. I picked up some nice, but plain picture frames and knew that I could be very creative with them. I chose some basic colored scented candles and found some plain, but elegant wine glasses to add to my cart. I searched the aisles for some inexpensive baskets. I also bought cheap plain ornaments. I paid for everything and headed home. I was now even more nervous about giving everyone a cheap Christmas present.
That evening, I mustered up all of my creative talents and set to work. With a little bit of glitter and glue, ribbons and paint, I managed to turn all of the items that I'd bought into some really fun and unique presents. Everyone on my list would be getting a cheap Christmas present that was completely unique to them. My best friend just got married, so I made a frame and 2 wine glasses for her. I decorated a small basket and put those items in there. I painted the ornaments with snowflakes and trees, snowmen and candy canes. Each one was different. After they dried, they made a really neat present. It goes to show that you can give a cheap Christmas present with some creativity and love. I couldn't wait to get them wrapped up.

If funds are tight, you may be considering a part time job. There are also times when a part time job is all you can have. This might be when you are in college, high school, or if you need a little extra money after retirement. There are many different kinds of places you can find a part time job, and you just have to find what is right for you. One way to find a part time job is to simply choose the places you think you would like to work, and go in and fill out an application. Some places have a high turn over rate, so you may get a call back quicker than you thought. Don’t forget to look at online job sites as well, you may find something there you may have missed otherwise.

When you walk into a bar, you make up your mind pretty quickly as to whether it has the right atmosphere for you. It's a personal thing and bar design is a factor. You may prefer something more contemporary.

In the UK, there are still bars in the countryside, although we would call them pubs, that have a bar design that hasn't altered in decades. They have etchings from the 18th century and lots of horseshoes and farming implements hanging on the wall. The urban pubs are mostly very modern. A lot of these have had tables taken out to give more room for drinkers to cram themselves in.
I like the café bars that you find in Europe. The bars in France, Spain and Italy are more family friendly and they have a nice atmosphere. You can get great food and no one hurries you. They are a welcome contrast to the bar design in the UK which just wants you to consume as much alcohol as possible. It's a different culture there, which puts the emphasis on conversation and the good things in life. You can sit outside and watch the world go by. As a woman, I would feel safe in going to one of these bars on my own. I would never enter a British pub on my own at any time of day.
The modern bars of today may be bright and shiny, but I prefer somewhere where I can talk to my friends. I don't want rustic horseshoes or a steel laboratory look either in the bar design. Something in between would be good.

18th Birthday

In the UK, the milestone for birthdays used to be twenty-one like it is in NZ and most other places. Then, the voting age was reduced to eighteen and this caused a lot of confusion. My parents gave me a choice of having an 18th birthday party or one for my 21st. I chose to have a 21st because the idea of eighteen being the new landmark was new and it didn't feel right yet. Nowadays, there is still a hangover from 21st birthdays being special and this is where the confusion comes in. A lot of young people end up having big birthday bashes when they are eighteen and again, when they are twenty-one. They get two for the price of one and that doesn't seem fair!
There is a campaign in Britain for the voting age and age of consent etc. to be reduced further to sixteen years of age. Supporters of the campaign argue that young people mature more quickly now. This may or may not be true, but I'm thinking about the confusion this would cause if it becomes law. Then, the kids would have three choices to pick from! Would they have a big celebration for their 16th birthday, 18th birthday or 21st? I suspect parents would be shelling out for all three and it will cost them a fortune. Fortunately, my two children are both over twenty-one now. They had parties for their 18th, which were more than the average celebration but the big bashes were reserved for their 21st birthdays.
We had a bit of a problem when it came to booking a venue for our kid's 18th birthday. None of the pubs or clubs wanted an 18th celebration on their premises, and we ended up throwing the parties at home. Eighteen is the legal age for drinking in the UK and the managers didn't want eighteen year olds who would bring lots of under age friends with them. They were worried about losing their license and I can understand their predicament. Under age drinking is a big problem in the UK.
Whatever age people might consider to be the age of maturity, an 18th birthday is pretty special. In the UK, an 18th birthday means you can vote in elections and drink alcohol, although I suspect that the vast majority of teenagers do not wait until their legal age! The next level of minimum wage kicks in and you can serve on a jury. All this and a party too!

Nothing strikes fear and dread into the heart of any spot-fearing individual than a red wine stain. This classic spot has ruined more than one garment. It has been the cause of dread for homeowners who own light-colored carpeting and it has left many smiles dingy-purple. Not every wine stain is red. You may find yourself wondering how to get rid of a white wine stain as well. The first step is to pour cold water on the affected area. This needs to be done as quickly as possible. These types of spills usually occur during a special occasion like a party and you may feel a bit rude, but it is crucial to get that cold water to the wine spot as soon as you possibly can in order to assure that it will be removed promptly. If the white stain is on clothing or other material that can be turned inside out, pour the water from the back of the area instead of the front. Of course, this approach can’t be used on most rugs so pouring from the top is the only option for these materials. However, a blouse should be turned inside out when addressing the area. Step two in the white wine stain removal process is to rub the fabric with laundry detergent. After applying the laundry detergent, let the fabric stand for about five to ten minutes. Dish detergent will work very well with this, too. If you are looking at a white wine stain on a rug, it is best to use a carpet spot cleaner. These can be found at your local grocery store in little time but it is always a good idea to keep some on hand for just such an emergency. If the wine stain is still visible then let the fabric soak in cold water for at least thirty minutes. This can be quite inconvenient but it is a must if you want to save the garment. Wash the fabric as you normally would after the soak but be sure to look for the wine stain before putting the garment into the dryer. If the spot is still visible, try a laundry stain remover and rewash the item. Your rug may need to be professionally cleaned if the white wine stain is still prevalent after a few hours. This professional cleaning should be arranged as soon as possible to assure that the white wine stain will be removed completely.

The World Book Encyclopedia

For a literate and literary person, The World Book Encyclopedia has many connotations, many associations, memories, meanings. As a kid, I found solace in reading, first the kid classics, then the works with themes of adolescent malaise, then—by way of secret searching in the parents’ bookshelves—the books with the “adult” content. I made my way to the set of encyclopedias we had, The Compton Encyclopedia, and later, through the other research books, including The World Book Encyclopedia, when I had exhausted the fiction and poetry at home and at the town library. My brother, in another respect, read only one book…or set of books. He read the encyclopedias. He would settle into Dad’s easy chair, the foot rest out and therefore the chair reclined, and he would start with A and page one and read until he had finished the volume. The next week he would go on to the next volume. My brother didn’t talk. I mean this in the literal sense: he was silent with words, save the occasional grunt (my mother called it) when someone greeted him or spoke what he probably considered unnecessary words at him. My brother was a genius. He went on to college in Alaska, then to Military Intelligence, and, I imagine, to reading the rest of the encyclopedias in print at that time—The World Book Encyclopedia, Encyclopedia Brittanica, The Columbia Encyclopedia. I recall that at about the same time he was self-sequestered to read encyclopedias, I was fantasizing about writing and the kinds of writing I would do when I grew up. One of my biggest visions included writing encyclopedia entries. I forgot about this niche writing until after years of college and teaching at a college, I broke away to write for a living. In my research and search for how-to-be-a freelancer and for writing gigs, I came across a call for writers to submit to a literary encyclopedia. Remembering my earliest of callings I bid/applied, then forgetting, went on to write web content…until I got an email from the editor of the 47-year-old publishing house, offering me select opportunities to write book review, then literary surveys for a online academic/literary/library database. It has become one of the best jobs on the planet, if you ask me. Brother works as an MIS, now, so I imagine he has moved to reading The World Book Encyclopedia and others online. He still doesn’t “talk”, emailing me once every few years, letting me know he loves me and is thinking of his big sister. But, I accept this distancing, understanding whether reading The World Book Encyclopedia (the number one best-selling encyclopedia) or writing entries for another comprehensive source, we are busy, necessarily solitary people. Thank God for the Internet.
